With weeks left before Christmas the countdown has begun for shoppers to start snapping up those festive gifts for friends and family. However, Consumer Direct London, the pan-London consumer advice service, is calling on Londoners not to let the festive spirit prevent them from being alert to their rights should they need to return any items.

Practical Action an international development charity reported that across the UK people will return up to £86 million worth of unwanted Christmas gifts this year.

Consumer Direct London is reminding people that they could be entitled to either a refund, replacement or repair if an item is not as described, not fit for purpose or not satisfactory quality.

Anyone with an unwanted or faulty gift this Christmas should either consult the relevant shops customer services department to understand what they are entitled too, or visit www.consumerdirect.gov.uk for some helpful advice on returning items.

Chairman of London Councils, Councillor Merrick Cockell said, “With Christmas only round the corner it is very important for shoppers to be aware of their legal rights when buying presents for loved ones.

“In the current financial climate when it is even more important for people to be wise with their money and to stand up for their rights.”
