Applications from suitably qualified and well motivated individuals are invited for the position of Research Fellowship in heterogeneous nucleation research in BCAST at Brunel University. This position is for 3 years and the starting salary will be between £30,122-£39,257 per annum plus £2,166 per annum London Weighting, depending on qualifications, experience and research track record.
BCAST is a speciality research institute (SRI) focusing on solidification related research with an international reputation and is the host of the national centre of excellence in liquid metal engineering (the EPSRC Centre – LiME). BCAST currently has 32 researchers and 6 supporting staff. Our research covers fundamental research, technological development and industrial applications in the field of solidification and solidification processing. BCAST is well equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for both solidification processing and materials characterisation. See http://bcast.brunel.ac.uk for more information.
The research fellow will join a team working on solidification behaviour of metallic materials under intensive melt shearing. The successful candidate will be specifically responsible for understanding the mechanisms to enhance heterogeneous nucleation for grain refinement of both aluminium and magnesium based alloys using experimental approaches. He/she is also expected to interact with other researchers in BCAST.
The successful candidate should have a PhD degree in materials science and engineering, physics or other engineering disciplines, and should have a sound background in physical metallurgy. Research experience in solidification processing of light metals and skills in microstructural characterisation of metallic materials using various microscopy techniques are essential. In addition, he/she should have good communication skills and be a team player.
